Yuletide progress [28 Nov 2009|12:32am]

auburnnothenna
[ music | REM - Try Not to Breathe ]

Wheee!

I rewatched my source material today and used it to add a few details here and there to my story. I've got 9028 words and expect to finish the first draft this weekend. I'm lucky I was able to use a story idea I already had and work it together with the request.

I know, I have this freakish love/hate relationship with deadlines. They make me crazy, but they make me write steadily, every day, and they also give me this great whooop of relief when I know I've succeeded ahead of time.

And I will get right back to work of GT&T once I've finished with the Yuletide story and get the next part out before New Year's. I swear. I can write on one thing and revise on another, I've discovered.

Could anyone remind me when the writers and artists are free to post their work outside the Big Bang site? I just noticed one of the stories reposted at the Pit of Voles.

ETA The release date was/is 11/27.

NCIS Fic: The Third Saturday in November [27 Nov 2009|11:18pm]

justhuman
What's American Thanksgiving without some football talk?

Title: The Third Saturday in November
Author: [info - personal] justhuman
Rating: PG-13, with mentions of bondage
Genre: Slash
Category: Established Relationship
Characters/Pairings: Tony, Tim, Tony/Tim
Spoilers: Mentions of SWAK. Timeline is sometime in S4
Warnings: None
Summary: Tony explains to Tim what being a Buckeye means to him. In SWAK, Tony and Dr. Brad Pitt (not the actor) aren't just filling in a little back ground and giving Kate something to gripe about. They're alluding to one of the great sports rivalries - Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The 13-13 tie mentioned in SWAK was the 1992 game.

Word Count: 2128
A/N: Many thanks to [info - livejournal.com] djmicheals and [info - livejournal.com] lookithaslegs for the holiday weekend beta. I did a bunch of editing based on their comments, so don't blame them ;-)

Brief Update on the Annual Ritual Sacrifice with Pie [26 Nov 2009|06:32pm]

The pumpkin was good, but there are 4 other offerings that I still need to try once dinner stops filling me up.

So far we've had Grannie Jeckle with only glimpses of Gannie Hyde. The glimpses have been directed at other people...so far

I've sent off a Thanksgiving themed NCIS fic for beta. Coming soon.

Sends good vibes to [info - personal] tejas hoping that her connectivity is soon restored.

You know what annoys me?

A story with no email for feedback, just a journal to comment in.

I read a story I really very much liked, but I also wanted to discuss the ways it didn't work for me, and so I thought: I'll send the feedback in an email. Only there was no email addy. So I tried the writer's livejournal profile. No email. Tried her story site and the stories there. No email. A journalfen link for replying, but see, if I wanted this feedback public I'd have already left it at the feedback post.

And now I'm annoyed and not in the mood to feedback at all in any form.

Too bad, because there was a lot about the story I wanted to praise.

Thanksgiving.

I was just informed that mom and her roommate were expecting me to do the Thanksgiving turkey. Along with pumpkin pie (crust from scratch) and my cheesecake.

Whut-?

This is going to be one of those weeks, isn't it?

Good thing it's 9am.

Happy Thanksgiving! [24 Nov 2009|07:56am]

Well, American Thanksgiving to those that celebrate.

I'm on my way to Nevada to reconnect with the clan

*promise not to start the fight with the Grannie*
*promise not to start the fight with the Grannie*
*promise not to start the fight with the Grannie*

I'll be back, late, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. At mom's I should have some connectivity, but I'm not completely sure of the situation. There's an extra grandparent aged person apparently living their now, which would make

-My grandmother who has reverted and makes teenagers look sane, even tempered, and pleasant
-M's (M is Mom's husband who is not my dad) Dad who was pleasant if curmudgeonly
-M's Mom whom I remmebered as being nice -- note that M's mom and dad are divorced.

I'm hoping this means that I get the tiny spare room, because that room has the internet connections ;-)

In other news, you know how company suddenly results in you cleaning your house like a mad man? Or possibly you've experienced the phenomenon that a ficathon story that's due inspires yardwork? Well I found the flipside last night. Packing for a morning plane flight inspires 1500 word completed stories -- note this does not seem to help with your ongoing WIP.

Catch you on later on this week. I'm about to test my new long life batter on the plane.

500,000 animals being slaughtered right now. [24 Nov 2009|02:58am]

icarusancalion
[ mood | blah ]

My mom has been talking about this for weeks:

500,000 animals to be ritually slaughtered?

On Tuesday, November 24th the Gadimai animal sacrifice festival will take place in southern Nepal. It is said that 500,000 animals including buffaloes, chickens, goats, pigs, rats, and birds will be tortured and slaughtered during this Hindu festival.

Write to the Nepalese Embassy: info@nepalembassyusa.org

In India, the ritual slaughter of animals in such rites as the Agnicayana has long been replaced with effigies. There is no religious reason for this throwback. Despite the detailed instructions in Leviticus, Judaism no longer sacrifices the fatted calf. Like that.

What no one will tell you about college. [24 Nov 2009|12:42am]

[ music | Skid Row ]

I'm tutoring high school students, prepping them for the SAT.

I think what they need as much as good SAT scores are some good college strategies. Share yours here.

So here it is:

What no one will tell you about college (until you get there).

1 - Want to increase your scores 5% without doing anything?

Sit in the same seat every day )

2 - Talk to your professor outside of class.

Disagree with your prof? Good! Take it to her/him at the end of class. )

3 - Bored? Ask a question.

Every time I found myself zoning out during a class I would raise my hand )

4 - Avoid clock-watching.

Avoid the clock-watching tick by sitting where you can't see the clock. )

5 - High school is for taking the classes you hate. College is for taking the classes you love.

Don't be a masochist -- if you can avoid that hated math class by taking a much more interesting astronomy class, do it.  )

6 - Know thyself. Work with your habits rather than against them.

If you suck at mornings, don't take that 8:30am Japanese class. )

7 - Avoid schizophrenia and be efficient: Take related classes at the same time.

You can use your readings from Indian history as sources for your Indian lit class and vice versa. )

8 - If the class you want is booked, show up anyway, books in hand, and participate vigorously.

The professor would rather have you as an extra student than the disinterested slackers in the back. )

9 - Give yourself flexibility: Plan, plan, plan.

When you're not sure of your major, take classes that apply to all three of your most likely majors first. )

10 - The one I learned too late: Build a relationship with professors who are top in their field by taking more than one class with them.

If they're a bit of a name, their opinion carries weight. )

Reason number 211 why I love these high school students. [24 Nov 2009|12:17am]

Reason number 211 why I love my high school tutoring students:

A student wrote his SAT essay. He detailed how, scientifically speaking, the planet doesn't need humans.

  • Word count: 1,332.

  • Interesting article: Clay Shirky's essay A Speculative Post on the Idea of Algorithmic Authority. Authority thus performs a dual function; looking to authorities is a way of increasing the likelihood of being right, and of reducing the penalty for being wrong. This is, oddly, something I think about a fair bit -- probably because the university I used to work at is run by scoundrels and liars. Over and over again the president (or more often his horrible "spokeswoman") would say things that I absolutely knew weren't true. Even writing about it, years later, when I no longer work there, makes my heart race. Of course, living through the George W. Bush years was pretty much the same thing: liars, liars, liars. So what makes an authority the authority when you know that what they say isn't accurate? Looking to authorities might increase the likelihood of being right when the value of "right" has nothing to do with verifiable facts.

  • Guilt still plagues me: Almost two years ago, I signed up for a story exchange and flaked out. I was having troubling writing anyway, and the prompts I received didn't spark anything. I felt horrible dropping out -- and have sworn off exchanges FOREVER as a result -- but I'm still glad I signed up because the person who got my prompts not only didn't flake out, she wrote a wonderful, wonderful story that I re-read again today: Salutation to the Dawn, a deeply romantic Ronon/Radek story with terrific world-building. Thank you, Pierson! I still love your story so much.

Quantifying a life. [22 Nov 2009|04:47pm]

icarusancalion
Good news on the work front: My tutoring job is going to give me 16 hours a week as of Dec. 1, which is great. It's an improvement.

The pay rate is good, and it gives me the required experience I need for teaching. (90 hours is the magic number. I'll have it by the end of December. Then I need a year of school for the teaching certificate.)

Unfortunately, it's not quite enough to live off of.

I don't have a car in car-dependent Maryland, so I'm having to ask "mommy" for rides to work, to interviews. I have all the time in the world to write -- yet can't find the space because I have to write around other people's schedules.

It's been four months and I'm getting the feeling she's burned out. As am I.

I want my life back.

Quantifying a life.

When I drove across country to Seattle in 1996, I had a car. )

Aside from the degrees, how did I end up with less than when I started?
